The context behind the number.

AreaScore is an editorial estimate of travel convenience. It helps compare areas; it does not rate an individual property or guarantee safety.

Five dimensions for an informed decision

The initial version combines desk research, official references and OpenStreetMap geography. Scores are preliminary editorial judgments, not field measurements, traveler reviews or a validated statistical model. We do not use illustrative scores from the initial project document.

How scores are assigned and calculated

Each dimension uses an editorial 0–10 scale. Anchors are: 0 no identified utility for that dimension; 2 very limited; 4 limited; 6 moderate; 8 high; 10 an especially favorable concentration within Cancun’s context. A 10 does not mean perfection or verified conditions on every street.

Tourist access considers the relationship to landmarks; mobility considers connections and transfer dependence; beach access considers identified entrances; services considers useful urban concentration; walkability considers compactness and apparent street barriers. These are qualitative judgments: we have not audited sidewalks, schedules, bus coverage or universal accessibility. The five dimensions may be correlated.

AreaScore sums each dimension multiplied by its weight and rounds to one decimal. When an assessment is missing, the result is “Not rated”; missing data is not replaced with zero. Local life filters urban and residential areas while retaining general weights. It is not a price filter.

What the colors mean

8–10: high convenience. 6.5–7.9: good. 5–6.4: trip-dependent. Below 5: limited for the profile. Gray: not rated. Labels describe convenience, never danger.

Travel sectors, not official boundaries

The map covers urban Cancun, the airport and the northern tourism corridor through Playa Mujeres. It does not represent the whole Benito Juarez municipality; Punta Sam and Playa Mujeres are included for travel continuity and belong to Isla Mujeres municipality. We group areas by stay experience and clip their geometry to coastline and water bodies.

Internal edges are editorial approximations, sometimes generalized by corridors or geographic bands. They are not official cadastral, neighborhood or superblock boundaries. Within 75 meters of another sector we show a boundary note and neighboring areas. Exact shared borders use stable catalog order. Geometries have not been field-validated.

The airport and outskirts have context polygons without scores. North and West Cancun are broad sectors pending detailed tourism assessment. We do not recommend a property solely because it falls within a polygon.

Distances, addresses and routes

Nearby landmarks use geodesic straight-line distance from your pin, calculated in kilometers. They do not imply public access, usable streets or walking minutes. The catalog identifies coordinates from an OSM feature or approximate reference; it does not establish the exact entrance. Routes, when openrouteservice is configured, are requested only on button press and start at Terminal 2 as a reference. Their times do not include live traffic.

Sources and updates

Data version: September 8, 2026. This date identifies desk research, not physical inspection or continuously updated provider data. Check hours, fares, entrances and conditions with each operator.

Area pages show the rationale for each dimension. MVP corrections update versioned JSON and GeoJSON files; the tool and pages read the same source.
